Telemann (1681-1767) published this work as part of his
Essercizii musici (1740), a set of sonatas and trios for
miscellaneous instruments.
This lovely sonata is a staple of the baroque repertoire; originally
composed for viola da gamba, it is commonly performed today on both viola
and 'cello. This transcription makes the four-movement work available to
the bass clarinetist - with no extended range instrument required. The
complete work would be an excellent addition to a recital program;
selected movements could make an excellent selection for contest or
audition.
