Bruch: Kol Nidrei, Op.47
German composer Max Bruch (1838-1920) composed his popular Kol Nidrei, subtitled Adagio on Hebrew melodies, in 1881. Originally composed for solo 'cello with orchestra, it was also arranged by the composer for 'cello and piano, the version from which this transcription was taken.

Chopin: Etude Op.25 No.7
While many of Chopin's Etudes for piano are virtuosic displays, the Etude Op.25 No.7 is marked with a "Lento" tempo marking and is familiar for its beautiful left-hand piano melody. Dan McGlaun's fine arrangement gives this melody to the bass clarinet, while the piano provides a simple accompaniment.

Wolfgang Gabriel's Sonatine Op.36 (1977) is a stunning three-movement work for bass clarinet and piano, and like his Sonata, is a fine addition to the bass clarinet repertoire. All three movements make use of the full range of the instrument in a lyric context, requiring familiarity and comfort with the altissimo register. The work does not, however, require an extended range instrument.

This expressive one-movement piece alternates sections of precise notation, spatial notation, and improvisation. For the improvised sections, the composer allows the performers much freedom, within the context of developing the preceding composed material. Nielsen: Canto Serioso
Carl Nielsen (1865-1931) originally composed Canto Serioso for horn and piano in 1913, later arranging the work for 'cello and piano. After comparison of the different keys chosen by Nielsen for the horn and cello, the F major of the horn version was found to be more suitable to the bass clarinet, and so this original key was maintained.

Vičar: Lullabies
This work is based on the folk music of Vičar's native country. The five minute long piece is generated from Moravian lullabies. The composer expanded the governing feature of Lydian mode, augmented fourth, into bi-tonality: a mother sings and rocks her baby (simple tune in D-flat major for the piano), but the child's dreaming comes from somewhere else (bass clarinet in G major).

Brasilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959) composed his well-known Bachianas brasileiras no.5 in 1938, for soprano solo accompanied by an orchestra of 'celli. The first movement of the work, the Aria, is one of his most familiar and beloved works, admired for its transcendent, lyrical melody.
